How To Keep Your Beauty Simple Household Remedies
A T this time of year you may be a : little “run down” yet not in need 1 of medicine. A tonic bath mixture, < which you can make at home and keep i ready for use, will be found very good and soothing in the bath last thing at night. Buy from the chemist four ounces of £ sea salt, two ounces of spirits of am- £ monia, two ounces of spirits of camphor, ; and eight ounces of spirits of wine. Dis- c solve the sea salt in a quart of hot water, ( leave until cold, add the spirits of wine, t ammonia and camphor, and mix by shak- , ing in a bottle. Keep the bottle corked, , and shake well before using the mixture. ( A couple of tablespoonsful in the bath ( will be sufficient. If tap water is hard, keep a lump rf rough Fuller's earth in a muslin bag t to put into the wash basin, and renew i it once a week. If this fails,' use fine r oatmeal. Keep a tin of the oatmeal in c the batliroom. Have pieces of muslin c handy, place a handful of oatmeal in i one, tie it with string, and throw the bag into the water before washing and ’
squeeze it a couple of times. The same bag of oatmeal will serve for two days, and should then be renewed. The treatment has a very good effect on t.’.e skin. ' For Rough Lips. To make a good healing lip salve, melt an ounce of white wax over low heat and, as it dissolves, gradually pour it . into an earthenware pan. Add to it an ounce of spermaceti and a small portion of alkanet root to colour it. Simmer the ingredients over a slow fire for 10 minutes, then strain through muslin, and while hot, stir in a few drops, of 'avender oil. Pour the sak e into jars and cover to make airtight. Headaches cause the brow to wrinkle with pain, the mouth to droop, and lines to appear round the eyes. In fact, they spoil good looks. There are simple remedies for headaches which are, more often than not, caused by wrong diet, over-eating, or some special food which disagrees. Take two tablespoonsful of powdered charcoal in half a tumbler of water, or squeeze the juice of a lemon
into a teacupful of black coffee and drink it without sugar. Another thing which brings relief is to bathe behind the ears with very ’hot water. A bad nervous headache may often be cured by putting a rubber hot water bottle at the base of the skull and for a short time using it as a pillow.
