SWIMMING PRIZES FOR SEASON

PRESENTATION MADE TO WINNERS CEREMONY PERFORMED BY MAYOR Shields, cups and certificates won in the Southland Swimming Centre’s competitions during the last season were presented by the Mayor (Mr John Miller) dt a gathering of swimmers at the Tepid Baths last night. The chairman (Mr H. W. Ashley) thanked Mr Miller for consenting to present the prizes and congratulated him on his return as Mayor of the city. The Mayor expressed appreciation of the chairman’s congratulations and said the presentation was the first official function he had attended since his reelection. This was appropriate as he had always taken a keen interest in the baths since they were officially opened by him in 1927. He congratulated the centre on the success of its junior team at the Nelson championships recently and he drew attention to the War Memorial Shield which would hang at the baths for six months before going to Otago, which had tied with Southland for the trophy. The centre had had a most successful season and hoped to provide a good display at the senior championships at Invercargill next January. This brought up the question of the provision of more accommodation which had been limited almost since the opening of the baths. The first estimate of the cost of the baths had been £12,500, but the structure had eventually cost more than £21,000. It had served a very useful purpose and it was impossible to measure the benefits to the young people of Invercargill in terms of money. The prizes were then presented, the list of trophies being as follows:— Martin Cup (most points in championship events). —Murihiku Club. Southland Amateur Sports Trust Cup (most points in men’s senior championships).—K. Shaw (Murihiku Club). Wilson Challenge Cup (most points in women’s senior events). —Miss M. McGrath (Murihiku).
