BOROUGH COUNCIL STATUTORY MEETING The statutory meeting of the Gore Borough Council to install the Mayor and councillors was held at noon yesterday. There were present: The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), and Crs G. E. Wallace, W. K. Hamilton, J. A. Baldey, R. L. Reid, N. Robson, T. Sim, G. C. Hamilton, J. C. Ray, R. S. Green, A. V. Latty and H. McQuillan. Leave of absence was granted Cr P. T. R. Mallon.
Following the signing of the declarations, the Mayor extended a welcome to the councillors and paid a tribute to the service of those members of the previous council who had not sought re-election. During the forthcoming term several proposals would be considered, notably an augmented water supply. The old council had the water scheme well in hand and it was hoped to have a full report about it before the council at an early date.
Cr Wallace thanked the Mayor on behalf of the new councillors for the warm welcome extended.
Cr Baldey was reappointed deputymayor. It was decided to hold the first meeting of the council on the first Monday in June. , Cr Green gave notice of motion to move at the next meeting of the council that council meetings be held every three weeks, instead of fortnightly. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES The following committees were appointed:— Finance, Town Hall, Sanitary and Health.—Crs Baldey, Sim, Green, and W. K Hamilton. Works, Saleyards, Reserves, Abattoir and Cemetery.—Crs G. C. Hamilton, Ray, Mallon and Wallace. Water, Lighting, Baths and Fire Prevention.—Crs Robson, Reid, Latty and McQuillan. The Mayor and Crs W. K. Hamilton, G. C. Hamilton and R. S. Green were appointed to the Library Committee. The Mayor and Cr Wallace were appointed representatives on the Chamber of Commerce. Cr Baldey was appointed the borough representative on the executive of the Southland Progress League. The Mayor was appointed the council’s representative on the Gore High School Board of Governors. MR DENHAM GIVES ADDRESS Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P. for Invercargill, addressed a meeting of members of the Southland General Labourers’ Union and members of the trade unions in the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms. There was an attendance of over 80 and Mr D. Harris, secretary of the General Labourers’ Union, presided. Mr D. McDougall, M.P. for Mataura, also spoke. At the end of the addresses a vote of thanks to the speakers and a vote of confidence in the Labour Government were carried unanimously. PERSONAL A motion of sympathy was carried with the relations of Mr F. S. Graham, a former councillor, whose death occurred on Monday, at the meeting of the Gore Borough Council.
