TEAM OF WINTON TRAINER

Northern Campaign In View SHILLELAGH WOOD IN WORK AGAIN Handicaps are due to appear tomorrow for the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting. Jolly Beggar will race at the Waikato meeting before taking part at the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting close on May 20. , Birchwood Hunt The Birchwood Hunt will open its season at Oreti on Wednesday afternoon. It is likely that there will be a larger number of horses than usual to qualify. Back Again Shillelagh Wood is back in work again, having been taken up by P. Boyle at Heddon Bush. The Woodend mare is reported to have made a good recovery from the unsoundness which necessitated her being put aside earlier in the season. To Be Hunted It is likely that Character’s first appearance as a ’chaser will be delayed for a time and he will be kept going in the hunting fields during the winter. Riverton’s Profit It has been stated that the Riverton Racing Club made a profit of £5OOO on its recent meeting, which was one of the most successful in the clubs history. Tauramai Tauramai has been taken over by the Riverton trainer, G. McLean, on a three years’ lease. When seemingly well past his best All Humbug won races for McLean, but Tauramai is likely to be a much more difficult proposition, although the facilities at Riverton will be all to his advantage. For Australia Te Hero, one of the best two-year-olds raced in New Zealand this season, will be sent to Sydney in July to be prepared for spring races, while Gay Son, a good two-year-old winner by Beau Pere, will also make the trip. Back to Awapuni It has been decided to return Ta'ngled to his trainer, L. Knapp, at Awapuni, after the North Islander has been located with S. Barr at Riccarton for a short time. Tangled proved himself a fine type of ’chaser on his southern tour and the racing he had can be expected to have improved him. Arctic Star’s Next On returning to Riccarton after racing in Southland at Easter, when he was placed in each of the four steeplechases he contested, Arctic Star lightened up in condition. The Diacquenod gelding is to race at the Wanganui and Waikato meetings before taking part at the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie in July. Northern Campaign The Winton trainer, F. Langford, will remove his headquarters to Washdyke during the winter months, from which centre he will campaign a strong team of steeplechasers. Langford intends proceeding north after the Dimedin meeting next month and will remain in Canterbury until after the National meeting in August. Present intentions are to race some of his charges at the Wellington meeting in July. Trisox, Gay Boa and Polar Star will be taken north, while it is also likely that there will be other additions. Trisox came through his Riverton engagements without any ill-effects and although he has been nominated for the Southland meeting it is more than likely he will make his next appearance in the Otago Steeplechase at Dunedin. It is not intended to race him to any extent on the northern tour and he is likely to be reserved for the Wellington Steeplechase and the Grand National Steeplechase. For southern events Trisox is now well up in the weights, but he has it in his favour that he is at home in either good or bad going. Gay Boa raced fairly well without showing up at Riverton, but the racing is expected to be to his advantage. Polar Star’s form on the third day was a very promising effort for a greenhorn, while he has also schoolwell in private. A three-year-old half-brother by Balboa to Trisox may also be taken north for educational purposes, while History Paper is to loin Langford’s stable this week. It is also likely that Horn’s Reef and Whaddon Chase will be taken up by Langford later on. Put Aside Both Sovereign Lady and Disdain have been put aside for the winter months. The former’s form in the Great Autumn Handicap was disappointing, but Disdain proved herself a brilliant two-year-old, and it is reported that her owner turned down an offer of lOOOgns for her. Career Ended The turf career of the Great Northern Oaks winner, Icing, ended after her unsuccessful effort on second day of the Auckland meeting, and she will be sent to the Kaotanui Stud. Her dam, Aspic, is the only Polymelus mare at the stud in New Zealand. Icing will probably be mated with Posterity. Mr G. M. Currie’s other two fillies, Relative and Scarf Dance, will accompany Icing to Kaotanui, where they will be mated with Ringmaster and Posterity respectively.

Booking To Beau Pere The phenomenal success of the imported sire, Beau Pere, in New Zealand this season has influenced several breeders to send mares to Australia to be mated with this son of Son-in-Law. Arrangements have been completed by Mr C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, to send several of the Dominion’s outstanding matrons to Beau Pere next season. These mares include Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap, owned by Mr F. Armstrong, of Christchurch; Zarcne (by Chief Ruler), the dam of Lowenberg, winner of the New Zealand Derby, and her half-sister, owned by Messrs T. J. O’Neill and P. A. O’Neill, of Wanganui; Cymene, dam of Cylinder (New Zealand Derby), owned by Mr H. D. Greenwood, son of the late Mr G. D. Greenwood, who raced Gloaming; two mares who will be sent by Mr W. Higgins, of Wellington; and Comedienne, dam of the Wellington Cup winner, Royal Artist, and who will be sent by Mr R. T. Reid. The last-mentioned breeder previously sent a mare to Australia for mating with Heroic, but the union proved fruitless.
