EMBARK TO RACE AT O AMARU

VOLOMA IN STEADY WORK PEGGOTTY FIRST RACED AS A PACER Acceptances for the Forbury Park meeting close at 5 p.m. on Thursday. In Steady Work In view of her engagements at Forbury Park Voloma has been kept up to her work at Winton and she will strip in forward order at next week’s meeting. The Adioo Guy mare does not travel particularly well but she will leave early in the week along with College Boy. Voloma is engaged to race over a mile each day but the big fields in which she is conceding 12 yards may be her greatest handicap. Being Spelled Kid Wolf will not race again until the spring and it appears a wise decision to let him up after the recent racing he has had. Good three-year-olds are few and far between in Southland and Coherto has probably taken a tighter mark than any but he does not appear to have yet recovered from the strenuous racing he had as a juvenile. F. J. Smith’s Team The Auckland trainer, F. J. Smith, made several additions to his team while in Christchurch for the championship meeting, two of his purchases being Parauri and Sante Fe. He secured

type of three-year-old and ranks as a brother to Tempest, but he has yet to be given a chance to live up to this breeding. Dry Track Preferred Although both Parisienne and Lucky Jack have won on holding tracks, R. B. Berry has given it out that their chances will be enhanced in the event of a fast track at Addington tomorrow, but this is unlikely to be the case. Barrier Manners Lynwood’s barrier manners do not appear to have improved. The first day at Addington he started behind a big field and began smartly but he refused to strike his hopples when asked to begin off the front row. Different Class It can hardly be said that the Australian team to take part at the championships represented anything like the same class as such fine Australian pacers as Walla Walla, Auburn Lad and Lawn Derby. As a Pacer It is not generally known that before being converted to the square gait, Peggotty was raced as a pacer. She had four starts with the hopples on but did not show up while she went out in her races at long odds. Her failure as a pacer was the reason for her being converted to the trotting gait. For Oam aru Embark is to be raced at Oamaru on Saturday and from all accounts he has done particularly well in his work. The Happy Voyage gelding has compiled a consistent record in recent starts and it has been noticeable about his racing that he always performs well towards the close of the season. He is well placed at Oamaru and the racing should be to his advantage when produced at Forbury the following week. New Record

Lawn Derby continues in his record breaking career, and judging by the fine form he has shown in recent starts his connections appeared to lose a good chance of winning big money with him by not entering him for the interDominion championships. At Harold Park last week he won over one mile and a-half in 3min 16 l-ssec and thus bettered the record held by Walla Walla.

Question of Points If it had been practicable to clock all the horses in the qualifying heats at Addington, there would have been a different allocation of time points, and a different field in the final. On the first day Parisienne was credited with 2J points, being the fastest place-getter, but Roi I’Or who missed third by a head, stepped 2.43 2-5, against 2.44 3-5 by the mare. Later in the day, Indianapolis (fifth) did at least a second faster than Plutus’s 2.42 1-5. On the second day Roi I’Or stepped 3.22, but Parisienne again scored the points with 3.22 2-5. In the. two-mile division, U Scott was credited with the points with 4.28 2-5, while Roi I’Or (fourth) went better than 4.26 4-5. If all the horses had been separately timed, Roi I’Or would have gone into the final with 7| points, and a clear lead for the £250 prize.

Championship Table. Here are the performances in the qualifying heats of the finalists in the inter-Dominion championships:#—
