OBITUARY
MR JOHN HUGHES The death has occurred at the age of 98 years of Mr John Hughes, one of Invercargill’s earliest settlers. In his younger days Mr Hughes was an outstanding sportsman, being proficient as a track athlete and as a boxer. Mr Hughes arrived in Invercargill at the age of 15, landing at Ocean Beach. His first job in New Zealand was driving sheep through Moko Moko to Wantwood, via Invercargill, Two Creeks and Gore. He then followed various occupations including shearing, bullock driving and gold mining. It was a boxer, however, that Mr Hughes became known and he took a big interest in this sport. Mr Hughes, who was born in Sydney, remained in Southland all his life after his arrival here, except for brief periods when he visited the North Island and Australia. A well-known son of Mr Hughes was Mr E. Hughes, a former All Black, who had an outstanding record, representing New Zealand for many years. He died in Australia. Mr John Hughes leaves two sons, Messrs J. and M. Hughes. The former is well-known in boxing and wrestling circles. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs M. Cornish.
