WANGANUI CUP’S LONG HISTORY

BRAZEN KING’S VICTORY YESTERDAY

(By

SIR MODRED)

Away back in the seventies Wanganui held strong claims to being considered the most important racing centre in New Zealand and so tne Wanganui Cup became a coveted event of 1875, when True Blue was the winner. For many years the Wanganui Jockey Club conducted leading fixtures, but it eventually fell upon evi. times and even had a struggle for existence, but it now occupies a strong position again. If racing slumped for a period in the Wanganui district the breeding industry did not, the result being that up to a short time ago it could count, two of the most famous studs in Australasia, the breeding nurseries conducted by Messrs G. M. Currie and J. Donald respectively, the former with Absurd and Limond and the latter as owning Chief Ruler, three noted sires bred in England. The Cup was run over two miles and a-quarter up to 1886, and from that year it was gradually reduced until it is now 10 i furlongs. Good horses have won the race on many occasions and the names of a number of the successful gallopers may be quoted as follows: —(1880) Betrayer, (1883) King Quail, (1887) Silence, (1888, 1890, and 1891) Dudu, (1894) Liberator, a great galloper and jumper, (1895) Lady Zetland, (1900) Advance, (1902) Nonette, (1903) Mars, (1912) Bronze, (1914) Sinapis, (1917 and 1918) Client, and (1929) Rapine. The winner of yesterday’s cup was the Australian-bred horse Brazen King who was bred in New South Wales, and in maternal line traces back to Nightmare, a famous taproot matron in Australia from whom the Southland mares Cough and Thornton are also descended. The Wanganui winner is by Brazen (imp., and a very successful sire in Australia), by Phalaris (twice premier sire in England, by Polymelus, son of Cyllene) from South Wales, by Llangibby (son of Wildflower) from Southern Belle, by Ayrshire from Violin, by Isinglass (a great sire) from String Band (well known in England and South America), by Barcaldine. Another son of Brazen successful in New Zealand was Bronze Eagle, and in Australia he was represented by noted winners in Kuvera, Air Queen, Bronze Hawk, Shakuni, and a large number of lesser lights. On the opposite side of his genealogical tree Brazen King’s dam was Booralie, by Roseworthy (imp. and son of William the Third, by St. Simon) from Burletta, by Wallace (son of Carbine) from La Tosca (a good mare), by Robinson Crusoe from Nightmare (a great stud success), by Panic (imp., and a sire of many stayers). Brazen King’s grand-dam, Burletta, was a sister to Class, dam of Bon Ton (New Zealand St. Leger) and The Toff (New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Cup, G. G. Stead Gold Cup, and Great Northern St. Leger). It may be mentioned that when The Toff won the New Zealand Derby in 1916, he was piloted by the one-time Southland jockey L. H. Hewitt, who was on a visit to the Dominion at the time after narrowly escaping from Germany on the outbreak of the Great War. In Germany Hewitt rode as first horseman for several years in the colours of the Royal Gratz Stud.
