NAVAL CONSTRUCTION IN AMERICA

REVISION OF LIMITATION ACT SOUGHT WASHINGTON, January 13. The Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral William Leahy, revealed that the Navy Department had recommended President Roosevelt to ask Congress for a revision of the Vinson-Trammel Act to permit naval construction in excess of the treaty limits. Admiral Leahy conferred with the Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, and the Far Eastern Division experts, while the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Mr Charles Edison, lunched with President Roosevelt and discussed naval needs in the proposed American rearmament plan. Both Mr Edison and Admiral Leahy indicated the need for the construction of additional fighting ships over and above the Treaty limits as well as the construction of additional auxiliary vessels in order to maintain the fleet’s supply lines.
