SPLENDID DRAFT OF LAMBS
VALUE OF TOPDRESSING MENTIONED Stated to be an example of the value of top-dressing pastures a splendid draft of lambs was sent into the Ocean Beach freezing works by Mr Peter Beggs, of Aparima. On the 470 acres of his farm approximately 1200 ewes are carried and, except that they were out on turnips for a fortnight in the spring, these were entirely pasture fed. The lamb return was 1600, and again the prevalence of twins in Southland lambing last year was emphasized, as of this number 800 were twin lambs.
Mr Beggs’s first draft for the works numbered 1090. Well conditioned and ideally suited for the Home market, they presented a fine sight when hung in the cooling room at the works. There was a very small percentage of seconds. Mr Beggs uses Southdown rams with Romney-cross ewes. It was stated that the number of lambs and their condition were a great advertisement for the province, especially in view of the exceedingly dry season through which Southland had passed.
