MOTOR-SHIP’S FIRST VISIT TO DOMINION

PORT JACKSON ARRIVES AT DUNEDIN (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, January 14. On her first visit to New Zealand, though she has already made two voyages to Australia, the Port Line motorship Port Jackson arrived this morning from London, via Suva, and berthed at Port Chalmers to discharge a considerable quantity of general cargo. In addition, the Port Jackson brought a number of passengers, most of whom disembarked at Port Chalmers. A modern motor-ship of jyst on 10,000 tons gross, the Port Line’s new vessel has many features which are an innovation for this line and she is undoubtedly one of the most up-to-date liners to visit this port. The passenger accommodation is all amidships on the boat deck and consists of one and two-berth cabins, to each of which is attached a well-appointed 'bathroom. The officers and crew are also housed in comparative luxury. Heaters are provided and hot shower rooms are available for members of the crew. The ship’s personnel numbers about 65. The voyage to Port Chalmers was without incident of note. The Port Jackson made calls at Curacao, Kingston, Jamaica, where oranges were loaded for Dunedin and Lyttelton, and Suva, where the vessel discharged a quantity of general cargo. She left London on December 2 and was scheduled to reach Port Chalmers tomorrow. It was found that with excellent weather during the whole voyage the Port Jackson had no need to put on her best speed to maintain her timetable. On the other hand it was found necessary to keep the speed down to about 15J knots. The Port Jackson has a maximum speed of about 18 knots. From here she will go to Lyttelton and will later visit Bluff, Wellington and Auckland.
