FAREWELL SOCIAL FUNCTION IN WAIKOIKOI HALL A farewell social to Mrs Simmers and the Misses Annie and Stella Simmers in the Waikoikoi Hall was well attended by residents of the district and visiting friends from other districts. Mr M. Shand was chairman. A programme was contributed by performers from Invercargill, Tapanui and Benio, the accompanistes being Mrs J. D. Edgar (Tapanui), Mrs T. McPhail (Benio), Mrs Watt (Mosgiel), and Mrs J. Spittle (Waikoikoi). The programme was as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Mrs J. D. Edgar; duet, Muriel and Peter Emerton; song, Mrs R. Kirk; violin solo, Mr B. Watt; song, Russell Kirk; recitation, Miss Norton; song, Mr Johnstone; piano-accordion solo, Keith McPhail; song, Mrs D. McNeil; songs, Mrs K. Kirk; songs, Mr F. Johnstone. Mr Shand referred to the assistance given by Mrs Simmers and her daughters to the Waikoikoi district socially, with the church, the sports life and all district activities. He presented Mrs Simmers with a chiming clock from the residents, and Misses Annie and Stella Simmers each with a travelling rug. Mrs W. J. McKenzie, on behalf of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, spoke of the service given by Mrs Simmers and her daughters as members of the organization. Mrs Simmers had been secretary of the Maori Mission Birthday League in the Missionary Union and harvest field secretary and a vice-president of the Women’s Division. From the Missionary Union Mrs Simmers and her daughters were presented each with a cup, saucer and plate, and from the Women’s Division Mrs Simmers received a picture, and the Misses Simmers each a bedroom clock. On behalf of the Basketball Club, Miss Jessie Lindsay presented to Miss Annie Simmers book-ends, and to Miss Stella Simmers a crystal scent holder. Mr Colin McKenzie spoke for the Waikoikoi Bible Class, referring to the assistance given by the Misses Simmers, and presented each with a Scofield Bible. The Rev. W. H. Norton, as minister of the Waikoikoi Presbyterian Church, said it was his privilege to speak on behalf of the church of the work done by Mrs Simmers and her daughters. Mrs Simmers deserved special honour for the way in which she had brought up her family. Mr George Simmers replied for his mother and sisters.
