PICTURES SCREENED BY MR TURNER MANY BEAUTIFUL VIEWS Mr G. M. Turner gave an interesting screening of pictures of different parts of Stewart Island. Before the screening Mr Turner said it gave him great pleasure to welcome the Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) and Mrs Mason to the island. He, personally, and the island, as a whole, felt highly honoured at having Mr Mason present that evening. It was very pleasing to note that during the last year four Cabinet Ministers had visited the island. During the screening Mr Turner gave a running commentary on the different pictures. The hall was full. More distant views of Stewart Island were first shown. They included scenes of a trip up the Rakeahua river through beautiful native bush to a little-known water fall, which forms a series of cascades falling some 800 ft, and Mount Anglem, the highest mountain on the island. The climb from sea level to the summit was 3200 ft and extensive views from the summit were shown of the coast line and Foveaux Strait. Also shown were Mason’s Bay, showing the overland tramp to the very fine nine-mile stretch of Mason’s beach and sand dunes, the trip by launch down the rugged east coast of the island to Port Pegasus, a distance of 45 miles, and coloured scenes around the gardens of Half Moon Bay and Paterson Inlet, with beautiful rata shown in colour. The first half of the programme closed with a series of films showing bird life on sea and shore. The second half of the programme continued with a description of the habits of the mutton birds and. an explanation of the mutton-birding industry of the island. There was also a comprehensive film showing the processes through which the birds passed from the taking of the chicken to the salting and packing into the kelp bag. The programme closed with an allcolour film showing scenes of the parks and gardens of London and Edinburgh and scenes in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Mr J. Sloan moved a vote of thanks to Mr Turner for the screening, and said that Mr Turner’s pictures were the greatest asset that the island had, as many persons had visited the island because of seeing his pictures in other towns. Mr Mason said he had much pleasure in seconding the vote of thanks. He was quite sure that everyone present had enjoyed every minute that evening. He thanked Mr Turner for going to so much trouble in arranging such a splendid programme with so short notice. Mr Mason said that both he and Mrs Mason were delighted with what they had seen of the island. The whole of the proceeds of the screening went to the hall funds. SOCIAL EVENING A social evening was given by the proprietors and staff" of Bragg’s store to Miss Beryl Harrison at Te-ahuru, Mr Bragg’s residence. Miss Harrison is leaving to be married. Presentations were made by Mr Rodney Bragg, on behalf of the staff, and Mr Bragg, on behalf of himself and his wife. YACHT CLUB A meeting of the Stewart Island Yacht Club was held in the Anglican hall. The commodore (Mr T. Bragg) was chairman. Final arrangements were made to send a yacht and crew to Dunedin for the Sanders Cup contest. A request was made for a delegate to attend a meeting of the association on Friday night. Mr Bragg was appointed to attend. The crew selected by the skipper, Mr George Bragg, is as follows:—Forward hand; A. Marshall; No. 2, Colin Topi; main sheet hand, L. Bragg. The delegates to represent the Stewart Island Yacht Club at the Dominion conference will be Mr T. Bragg and Mr H. Hansen. PERSONAL

The Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) and Mrs Mason returned to the mainland yesterday after spending a short holiday on Stewart Island. The Tamatea arrived yesterday with over 90 passengers and a quantity of goods and sailed again at 2 p.m.
