CHEAPER AIR MAIL POSTAGE
EXTENSION OF IMPERIAL SERVICES (Received January 12, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 11. The aeronautical correspondent of The Times, discussing the introduction of air mail postage of 31d from Britain to Malaya on February 23 and its extension to Australia later, says: “During the two months smee tne introduction of the 3Jd rate on the South African route the weekly mail loads have been 10 times as heavy as under the surcharge system. “The flying-boat route from India to Singapore is now prepared and sufficient Empire flying-boats have been delivered to operate the extra service. “Imperial Airway’s weekly mail loads to India and Malaya are about 36001 b and other first-class _ mail is 20,0001 b a week. By the, evidence or the African mails it may be assumed that the whole of that additional load will be carried by air-liners after February 23. . , , c “Sweeping changes in the scheme ot operation will be required. Instead of the present bi-weekly services from Britain to India there must be four operated by Empire flying-boats in order to absorb the big mail loads.
