STEWART ISLAND PRAISED
MINISTER SPEAKS OF POSSIBILITIES “ATTRACTIONS SHOULD BE BETTER KNOWN” Stewart Island has a strong advocate for its charms in the Attorney General (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) who returned to Invercargill yesterday after a short holiday at the island. “A remarkably attractive place,” he described it in an interview with The Southland Times. “Its scenic attractions would be hard to match anywhere in New Zealand.” The attractions of Stewart Island should be better known than they were, said Mr Mason. The residents of Invercargill spoke warmly enough of the island, but it appeared to receive little advertising. The fact that Halfmoon Bay, from where ready access to all beauty spots was obtained, was only two hours’ journey from the mainland should be made generally knojvn. There was good accommodation on the island for visitors, and travelling to and holidaying on Stewart Island was particularly inexpensive. To people in the north, Stewart Island seemed very distant. That, perhaps, was the reason why those in the North Island did not know its appeal as a holiday resort as well as they might. But one could not imagine a visitor to the island being disappointed, no matter how long a journey he may have taken to see it.
Mr Mason, who is accompanied by Mrs Mason, returns north by car today.
