ECONOMIC MISSION TO ROME
CONFLICTING REPORTS OF BELGIAN’S VISIT LONDON, December 20. There are conflicting reports about the outcome of the conversations between Dr Paul van Zeeland, the Belgian statesman and economist, and Italian leaders. A message from Rome says that Dr van Zeeland did not see Signor Mussolini, and it is believed he found little encouragement in .official circles for the proposed international economic conference. However, it was announced at Whitehall that Dr van Zeeland had made such progress with his report that the British and French governments expect to receive it before Christmas.
M. DELBOS REPORTS ON TOUR OF EUROPE
PARIS, December 20. The French Foreign Minister (M. Yvon Delbos) received the British Ambassador to Berlin (Sir Eric Phipps) and detailed the events of his European tour. ;
POLISH RELATIONS WITH LEAGUE
RUGBY, December 21. Asked about the recent statement issued in Warsaw on Polish relations with the League of Nations, the Foreign Secretary (Mr R. A. Eden) reminded the House of Commons of an official state-, ment issued by the Polish Foreign Minister (Colonel Josef Beck) and himself a year ago on the occasion of the latter’s visit to London, when they recorded the opinion that nothing would be more fatal to hopes of European appeasement than the division of Europe into opposing blocs. The Polish Government was aware that the attitude of the British Government on this point had not changed, said Mr Eden.
