OTAUTAU

MEETING OF GARDEN CLUB At the monthly meeting of the Otautau Garden Club, Mr D. Mitchell ’resided and extended a welcome on behalf of members to Mr W. J. Wesney, who has just returned from a trip to Britain and the Continent. Mr Wesney replied. The chairman reported that the executive had met and discussed several matters. It recommended that the prize money at the autumn show be 50 per cent, of the entry money for first and 25 per cent for second, the club to retain 25 per cent. The recommendation was adopted. Mr Mitchell said that Miss Harrington (secretary) had been granted leave of absence for three months, and Miss Gould was appointed to the position. Mr J. Kirk was appointed show secretary. The chairman reported that along with Miss Gould and Mr N. McFadgen he had attended a meeting of horticultural societies in Invercargill with the object of forming a Southland Horticultural Association, which was to be composed of all garden clubs and others interested. The meeting had been sponsored by the Riverton Club. One of the objects was to get lecturers, and another was to arrange championships, which would be allotted to the various societies connected with the organization, and for which a cup would be given, which would remain the property of the central body, but a miniature cup would be given to the winner. Mr F. Girvan had been appointed president and Mr G. M. Broughton secretary. It was proposed to make a levy of 10/6 on each club. Mr McFadgen said the idea of forming the association was to foster garden clubs, and it was not proposed to interfere with show dates. If the Otautau Club decided to amalgamate it could draw on the central body for lecturers, and the reverse would also apply. The club was entitled to nominate two delegates. It was decided to join the association. Mr Wesney referred to the horticultural display at the centenary celebrations at Riverton and said the members were expected to take part in that section. Taking a broad view Mr Wesney said the name should be Wallace instead of Riverton, and he was of opinion that they should take part. It was decided that a sub-committee, comprising Miss Gould (convener), Mesdames G. B. Saxelby, G. R. Millan,. N. McFadgen, F. Eason and A. P. Harrington, Messrs D. Mitchell, W. H. D. Gazzard and J. Souness be appointed to make the necessary arrangements. Mr Wesney gave a brief account of his trip. The competitions resulted as follows:—Vegetables: Miss T. Scatter 1, Mesdames J. Kennedy and D. Mitchell 2 eq., Mrs D. Mitchell 3. Vase of flowers: Mrs F. Eason 1, Mrs W. Thompson 2, Mrs J. Kennedy and Mrs D. Mitchell 3 eq. Single bloom: Mesdames R. G. Cowan and H. A. Bone 1 eq., Mrs F.
