OARSMEN IN TRAINING

Oarsmen at Riverton at present are taking full advantage of the beautiful weather and may be seen practising solidly during the long hours of twilight. The majority of members are now fairly fit, and the solid training carried out during the last month has been beneficial. The crews now are concentrating on combination, and most of them are showing a marked improvement. . .

The senior four has been practising consistently and looks like repeating last year’s performance. There has been a slight alteration in the junior four and it will take the water as follows: — G. Bulman (s), A. Weir, L. Dean and D. Cassels. The members of this crew are experienced rowers, but as the regatta is fast approaching they will have to get down to solid team work. Like the other crews, this crew needs to concentrate on combination. The A maidens have improved tremendously now that they are able to train together. Another week’s consistent training will see this crew with an excellent chance of victory. The A youths are-very conscientious in their training. The major fault with this crew is sluggish handwork and this will have to be remedied before regatta day. The B youths are also keen and should put up a good performance. CHILDREN’S PARTY The children’s Christmas tree . party was held on Friday morning at the Riverton District High School. Santa Claus was introduced by the Rector of the school (Mr Smith) and distributed Christmas gifts to the children. . At the conclusion of function, the Rector referred to the approaching departure of Mr M. P. Lyng and Miss B. Cormack, and presented them each with a gift from the staff. The Rev. F. L. Irwin, on behalf of the Riverton School Committee, referred to the excellent services towards the advancement of the school given by Mr Lyng and Miss Cormack.
