OPPOSITION TO HIRE PURCHASE
SOUTHLAND REMIT LEADS TO INQUIRY (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, December 10. At the meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday, a remit from the Southland branch asking that the Government be urged to abolish the hirepurchase system was discussed. It was thought that, while the hirepurchase system served a useful purpose in many ways, there was no doubt that in some cases there were clauses in the agreement which operated very harshly at times. After considerable discussion, it was decided to have an inquiry made into the working of the system to ascertain how the agreements operated, and whether or not there was just cause for complaint.
