BOXERS FOR EMPIRE GAMES
MR F. H. HUGHES APPOINTED MANAGER
Mr F. H. Hughes, of Invercargill, has been appointed manager of the boxing section of the New Zealand team for the Empire Games at Sydney in February. This will give Southland a second representative at the games, A. Sutherland, the middleweight boxer, having already been selected. It is possible that Southland will have a third representative in the team, as Miss Joyce Macdonald, the 15-year-old swimming champion, is believed to have an excellent chance of being included.
Mr Hughes is well known as secretary of the Southland Boxing Association, a position he has held for the last eight years, and as a golfer of more than average ability. He was for some years secretary of the Queen’s Park Golf Club and is at present secretary of the Invercargill Golf Club. He has been secretary of the Southland Wrestling Association since it was formed six years ago and is interested in other sports, including badminton.
