FIELD TRIALS
SOUTHLAND KENNEL CLUB GOOD PERFORMANCES The Southland Kennel Club held the Bnal field trials for the season at the Beatrice street ground on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal and there was a large attendance of the public. The classes were puppy (retrieve on feather), novice (retrieve on feather) and open (find and push out). In the open class two dead birds were placed in the cover on the approach to the trap and had to be found and retrieved to hand before the dog could work up to the bird in the trap. The judge for all events was Mr A. Fraser. The officials of the club put through a heavy programme in a capable manner, although with record entries in the novice and open classes it was fairly late when the trials were concluded. Mr G. Dennis’s Labrador, Dixie of Glenlossie, gave excellent performances to win both the puppy and novice classes, and Mr W. Pay’s Prince Norval of Ivanhoe, was outstanding in the open class, the judge remarking that the performance in this class generally exceeded his expectations. Results were as follows:— PUPPY (seven entries) Pts G. Dennis’s Labrador, Dixie of Glenlossie 82 F. Morrison’s Labrador, Lou 78 T. Blackler’s Labrador, Floss 76 W. Cavanagh’s Labrador, Gyp 73 Mrs S. McPherson’s curly coated retriever, Luffra 57 The winner of this class was almost perfect in finding, speed and retrieving, while the second placed dog lost only slightly in all departments. NOVICE (13 entries) Pts G. Dennis’s Labrador, Dixie of Glenlossie 92 F. Morrison’s Golden Labrador, Goldie 79 T. Blackler’s Labrador, Floss 76 J. J. Dobb’s c.c.r. Mansfield of Terrado 72 J. Leonard’s c.c.r. Jean 61 Mr Dennis’s Dixie of Glenlossie repeated her fine work and scored full points in speed, finding, retrieving and mouth to beat Mr Morrison’s Goldie, who was perfect in carrying her bird and generally put up a good performance. OPEN (16 entries) Pts W. Pay’s Labrador, Prince Norval of Ivanhoe 83 S. Lindsay’s Labrador, Lock 83 P. Hennessey’s Springer Spaniel, Sir Three Star 69 A. W.'Broad’s Labrador, Beauchamp . 68 R. Broad’s springer spaniel, Chum 68 The winner of this class gained full points for ranging and finding, being under good control. He lost slightly in trap work, but retrieved well, although he did not deliver two of the birds to hand. Mr Lindsay’s Lock was splendid in her trap work, but her ranging was not up to the high standard of that of the winner, while she also lost slightly in retrieving and speed. Mr Hennessey’s Sir Three Star ranged fairly well, stood to game, but broke to shot, found his birds well and carried them perfectly, although there was very little between this dog and the next two.
