SCHOOL PRIZES
To The Editor
Sir, —Now that the year is drawing to a close it will be interesting to know if the pupils of the Gore School will be awarded prizes for their year’s work. Why does Gore have to take a back seat when nearly every other school in the South Island gives prizes at the close of each year. Mataura with a smaller school can give its pupils a good day’s sport and prizes as well, and every pupil has a memory of his break-up day. Gore pupils at the close of each year are presented with an ice cream each. What have any of these children to look back to, to remind them of their break-up day? Is it lack of interest? If the parents were approached surely they would gladly do their part in subscribing to the school prize fund and thus gladden the hearts of every child. —Yours, etc., ONLOOKER. December 1, 1937. [This letter was referred to the head master of the Gore school (Mr R. G. Watson) who stated that the matter had been brought up at a meeting of the school committee and it had been decided to follow the practice of previous years and not award prizes.]
