RACING FORM INTERESTING FIXTURES AHEAD (By SIR MODRED) The calm before the storm of holiday racing at Christmas will be broken by the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s oneday fixture this afternoon. Ocean Singer has been sprinted of late on the Southland Racing Club’s tracks to put an edge on his pace for extended racing. The Songbird gelding is progressing the right way for J. Gray. A recent addition to T. E. Bankhurst’s East Road string is a very handsome half-sister to Fog Peak. She is by Night Raid from Aspiring, by Some Boy II (imp.) from Silver Peak. Colds are prevalent in Invercargill galloping stables at present and trainers are at their wits’ end to produce many pupils fit and well for holiday meetmThe Epsom Turf Club’s meeting will form the turf attraction for Melbourne racegoers today, the Epsom Cup (handicap), £350, and a trophy valued’at £25 (Ijm.) being the principal event. Successful as a hurdle racer in Sydney, the six-year-old gelding Hands Up is by Night Raid (imp.) from Redshank (bred in Australia), by Thrice (son of The Welkin from a mare tracing back to Carbine) from Red Streak (winner of the V.R.C. Oaks), by Wallace (son of Carbine) from Elsie (imp.) by St. Simon. The last named mare (Elsie) was probably the only mare by St. Simon ever introduced into Australia. She was very successful at the stud in Australia. In Sydney this afternoon the racing public will gather at the Warwick Farm meeting, at which the leading event will be the Kirkham Stakes, £750, for two-year-olds, with penalties (five furlongs). The stout-hearted and light-framed mare Amelita may not linger much longer on the racecourse as she has been mated with Nigger Minstrel. Very well at present, however, she may yet earn stake money before the close of her galloping career. She is a well-bred Australian thoroughbred by Ronsard (imp., and by Son-in-Law) from Black Vera, by Black Jester from Perseverance 11, by Persimmon (son of St. Simon and a very successful sire). The result of the mating of a mare bred close up to the stout Son-in-Law with Nigger Minstrel (stayer and sire of stamina) will be interesting.
