WAIKATO MEETING The Waikato Trotting Club will race at Hamilton, the fields throughout being much larger than usual. WINNING MARES LORD WARDEN’S PROGENY (By SIR MODRED) The imported English horse Lord Warden, by Hurry On, and tracing back close up on the maternal side to Miss Gunning 11, a daughter of Carbine and the great racing mare Memoir, by St. Simon, is apparently succeeding where many other foreign sires in New Zealand are not very successful. The stallion referred to can claim a large number of winning sons, but few daughters with scoring brackets to their account. Beginning with Lady Kyra the female performers by Lord Warden are building up a satisfactory winning total, including classic and handicap events, with Ceme Abbas at the head of the list, and it was thus interesting to observe that another of the tribe was discovered in winning vein at the recent Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting. This was the three-year-old filly Privy Seal, who accounted for the Ponui Handicap (one mile) and in her achievement came through on the rails to win easily by three lengths in lmin 40 3-ssec. The manner of her success suggested ability to stay on and here again it is welcome to find that daughters of the horse by Hurry On are proving capable of attaining success as stayers and probably in turn to rank as the dams of stout gallopers. Studmasters are more than likely to keep a keen eye on mares of this sire’s line with a view to future stud possibilities. When sold as a yearling at the National Sales of 1936 Privy Seal cost a Te Awamutu purchaser 55 guineas. Her breeding is interesting in Southland in maternal line, as it is represented hereabouts, as follows:— Privy Seal is by Lord Warden from Palestrina by Clarenceux (imp.) from Judith, by Martian (imp.) from Hebrew Maid (imp), by Orion from Jewish Maiden bv Sheen from Maid of Lome, by Barcaldine. In her day as a public performer Palestrina was a very smart racer and in addition to a victory in the New Zealand Oaks she won a number of imnortant handicaps, including the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer Handicap Waimate Cup, Dunedin Jockev Club’s Birthday Handicap, Southland Racing Club Handicap, and other similar events. In passing, it may be remarked that a member of this maternal sire line is working on the Invercargill tracks in a juvenile filly by Hunting Song (imn.) from French Belle, bv Cbrenceux (imo.) from Pitbrow T.ass (imp.. and dam of Pitoron). by Galloping Lad (son of Galopin. by St. Simon). Favouring the Clarenceux sfre light bay colouring the unnamed filly referred to is training on for F. Voight. She moves sweetly and is being afforded time to mature steadily.
