LAND RUINED BY GRASSHOPPERS

Worst Plague For 35 Years In N.S.W. CRAWLING MASS ON HUGE FRONT FARMERS FACING SERIOUS LOSSES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received November 1, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 1. Wheat growers and graziers in New South Wales are facing serious losses because of a plague of grasshoppers, which have become a crawling mass on a huge front, devastating the northwest of New South Wales. Extensive tracts of grazing land have been eaten out in a few weeks, days or hours, according to the density of the swarms. Stock inspectors describe it as the worst plague for 35 years. Nothing but an act of God is capable of checking the pest. Tons of poisoned bran and flame-throwers are being used to eradicate the grasshoppers, but with little success. Reports from southern New South Wales indicate that a similar state of affairs has arisen there, causing the utmost concern to small farmers as well as the Government officers who are co-operating in efforts to find an effective way of dealing with the pest.
