OREPUKI

FAREWELL On the eve of their departure for their new home in Christchurch, Mr and Mrs W. Crowther, who are retiring from business, were entertained by the residents of Orepuki and the surrounding districts. Cards and dancing were indulged in, while items were given by Mrs Egerton, Mr J. Brown and Masters D. Young and E. Fraser. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr W'. Menpes. Mr R. Lee was M.C. At a suitable interval Mr J. Hennessey, who occupied the chair, spoke of the sterling qualities of the guests and of the good work done by them, in their 50 years residence in the district Mr R. S. Young who represented the Returned Soldiers’ Association, gave gave an account of Mr Crowther’s work during the Great War, when he had won the rank of Major. The Rev. Irwin (Riverton) on behalf of the Church of England parish spoke of the untiring services given to the church by the guests. Mr E. D. Bone on behalf of the various sports bodies, referred to the interest Mr and Mrs Crowther had always taken in football, tennis, basketball, bowling and at one time cricket and the now almost forgotten racing club. Mr B. C. Horrell (Te Tua) the member for the Orepuki riding, and Mr J. Mclntyre (Tuatapere) also spoke of their work as citizens of Orepuki. Mr T. D. Suddaby endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers and thanked Mr and Mrs Crowther for their work in the church, especially Mrs Crowther who had for a number of years been Sunday School superintendent and church organist. He then presented them with a handsome chiming clock, suitably inscribed and an engraved silver cigarette case. Mr Crowther suitably responded. PRESENTATION The residents of Waihoaka gave a farewell party recently in honour of Mr and Mrs H. Church, who are leaving the district to take up residence in Christchurch. Cards, dancing and games made the time pass quickly. Mr R. S. Young, on behalf of the residents, asked the guests to accept a handsome beaten brass fire-screen and' smoker’s set. Other speakers were Messrs Brown, Martin, Butson, Davis, T. Young and Barry. Mr Church suitably replied.
