RAM FROM KING’S FLOCK

Mr W. FALCONER’S PURCHASES TWO HIGH-PRICED SHEEP Two first-class Southdown shearling rams were bought for the Southland Frozen Meat Company, Makarewa, by Mr W. Falconer (works manager) at a recent Chichester sale. One was bred in the King’s flocks, and the other came from the estate of the Duke of Bedford. Both were high-priced. They will reach the company’s farm, by way of Australia, some time during March next, and they are intended to further the interest of the Southland fat lamb trade.

Mr Falconer has been greatly impressed by the fine quality of the stock he has seen in England (says the London correspondent of The Otago Daily Times writing on September 18). At the Chichester sale his chief competitors for the Southdown rams were Australians, who were also buying stock in England for the improvement of their flocks. “They are not hampered in the same way as New Zealanders are,” said Mr Falconer. “They have not our embargo regulations to contend with.”

Since he arrived in June Mr Falconer has visited and inspected the principal meat markets between London and Aberdeen, acquiring a great deal of information which will be valuable on his return. He has also been to' the Continent, where he went to the Paris and Dusselorf exhibitions. He was much impressed by .the friendliness of the German people. Mr Falconer sails on September 24 for Montreal in the Duchess of Richmond. Before connecting with the Aorangi at Vancouver on October 26 he plans to visit Boston, Chicago, New York, Banff, Nigara, and Toronto. Mr Falconer will arrive in Auckland on November 15.
