LIST OF TELEPHONE SUBSCRIBERS
DIRECTORIES TO PRESENT NEW APPEARANCE The telephone directories of New Zealand will present a new appearance in the near future. It is becoming increasingly important that subscribers should use an up-to-date list because of the big increases in their numbers. The Post Office is, therefore, adopting a method of indicating the latest edition at a glance. Starting with the October issues of the directories (Christchurch and Wanganui) the covers of the whole series will be printed in chocolate and green. Every directory is brought up-to-date and reprinted twice a year, and when the new colour scheme has run through the complete series, the Post and Telegraph Department will revert to the familiar red and dark blue ink for a complete edition alternating between two colour schemes each six months. This is the second change which has been made in the appearance of the directories. For some years they were all bound in heavy red paper which it was discovered would release a good dye when boiled and consequently was in demand for unofficial reasons. This was renlaced by a two-colour effect on a strong manila paper. A special staff of the General Post Office is continually engaged in revising and issuing fresh editions of the directories, and they have just despatched the largest of the series, that of Auckland, each copy of which weighs 11b soz, the whole edition requiring over 20 tons of paper. It requires no fewer than 10 tons ot manila paper to provide simply the covers of New Zealand’s telephone directories throughout the year.
