PREPARED OPIUM IMPORTED

SEAMAN FINED £125 (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 15. Shortly after the Wanganella arrived yesterday Customs officials searched the cabin of a passenger from Sydney, and later Detective Brady arrested a welldressed young man. Today, Leonard Thomas Thorpe, a seaman, pleaded guilty to a charge of importing into New Zealand a dangerous drug—namely, six tins of prepared opium. The Collector of Customs said the opium was found in the rafters of a cabin and in a lifeboat. Thorpe admitted he had brought opium, and said it was intended for Chinese. The defendant was fined the minimum penalty, £125, or three months’ imprisonment.
