CARPENTERS AND JOINERS

COMPLETE AGREEMENT IN DISPUTE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON September 15. The final day of the hearing of the Dominion Carpenters and Joiners’ Dispute was completed today at Wellington before 1 Mr M. J. Reardon, the Conciliation Commissioner and representatives of both sides. A complete agreement was reached. A five-day 40-hour week was fixed, the hours to be worked each day between 7.30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Overtime, piecework rates and statutory holidays are the same as the 1936 award.

The clause about annual leave was abandoned.

The employers’ offer of 2/9 an hour based on the recent pronouncement of the Arbitration Court was agreed to by the workers with the addition of §d an hour as an allowance for tools in accordance with the practice which prevailed under the earlier awards. The additional payment applies to joiners as well as carpenters.

The special allowance of 3d an hour for men working in fertilizer and chemical works was accepted by the workers’ representatives. The provisions about wages are to be retrospective to the date of the court’s pronouncement on September 8. The extra allowance for tools of Jd an hour is to apply from September 15. All the other provisions agreed on in the award are to become effective from the time of the making of the award by the court. The term of the award is fixed for one year beginning on September 15, 1937.
