A_ meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Gilbert Vincent Shaw, a saw mill employee, of Otautau, was held at the court house, Otautau, before the official assignee (Mr A. McCarthy). Bankrupt was represented by Mr G. H. Hodges, and Mr G. Cruickshank appeared for the following creditors: Messrs N. McNay, Riverton; Walter Crowther, Orepuki; J. A. Adamson and Sons, Orepuki; Finn and McDonald, Orepuki; and C. C. McKeown, Orepuki. Following is a list of the unsecured creditors:—N. H. Other liabilities were: Butterfield’s, Dunedin, £10; Singer Sewing Machine Company, £ll. The only assets were furniture valued at £5O, leaving a deficiency of £ll7 14/9. In his sworn statement debtor said he had resided in Otautau for a period of two months preceding the filing of his petition. He was now engaged by Messrs Thomson and McKenzie, saw millers, and previously was employed by Messrs Sheriff and Company, for whom he worked for about two months. With the exception of the short time he had been in Otautau all the working years of his life he had spent at Orepuki, where he had been engaged as a saw mill employee, and at times as a gold prospector. He was a married man with three children, and since then he had found difficulty in meeting his indebtedness for living expenses. He had worked at saw mills very irregularly during the period of the depression and had no regular source of income. He had not been extravagant, and he attributed his existing financial difficulties to the irregular employment available during the slump period. He had no assets other than was shown in the statement of accounts, and could not see his way to make any offer to his creditors. He had furniture to the value of £5O, which was in his wife’s name. A resolution was carried that bankrupt’s discharge be opposed until he pays 10/- in the pound, after which the meeting was adjourned sine die.
