COURSING
MAGGIE WHITE WINS MAIDEN STAKE HARE RUNS FINALISTS TO A STANDSTILL Nine dogs were entered for the.ln-, vercargill Coursing Club’s Maiden Stake meeting at the racecourse on Saturday and a splendid afternoon’s sport was provided. The hares proved to be in good condition and in many runs the dogs were unable to take a turn before the hares reached their safety zone. Nightcaps owners provided the winner and the runner-up. The final run was generally considered to be one of the best possible. A very strong hare was provided for the finalists and it proved master of the situation by running the dogs all over the plumpton and finally running away from them. The dogs gave.up, the winner having to be carried off the plumpton. Following are the results:— MAIDEN STAKE (Winner £5, runner-up £2) First Round W. Dahren’s bd and w d Great Chief (White Chief—Sabotage) beat. J. Curry’s w d Popeye (White Chief— White Damp). Points, 4—3 J. F. Gill’s f d Rustler (Winooka — Something Shocking) beat A. E. Rustler had no chance to score. Points, 3—o.
Maggie White beat Princess Doreen. Again there was a “no course,” but at the second attempt Maggie White won comfortably. She led up, turned and killed in a sound course in which there
was opportunity for Princess Doreen to score more had she been able to do so. Points, s—l. Master Aromet ran a bye. Third Round Great Chief beat Master Aromet Great Chief had all the better of it in pace and work from the slip. He lea up and did what little work there was. Points, 4—nil. Maggie White ran a bye. Final Maggie White beat Great Chief. A strong, clever hare led the finalists all over the enclosure, from slips to escapes, to slips again, back to the escapes and round the field—and then got home comfortably. Maggie White led .up strongly and did most of the work m a gruelling course, so much so that twothirds of the way to the escapes on the last lap she gave up and lay down. Great Chief, who had shared very lightly in the work,' managed to carry on for a short distance, but not far enough to give him a win. Points, 12—11.
