FAMOUS SIRES’ RECORDS

Wallace And Limond MERITS OF PROGENY In response to a request from a correspondent, who wished to know whether Limond sired the winners of more classic races than Wallace, the Melbourne writer, “Chiron,” gave the stud records of these two famous horses at some length. The figures favour Limond, and he has some young stock that may improve his record in the next few seasons. Limond has been represented up to date by eighteen individual winners of thirty-four classic races, while Wallace can lay claim to fourteen winners of thirty classics. Although the advantage in numbers rests with Limond, there will be a diversity of opinion regarding the relative merits of the progeny of the two horses. Whether the Limond winners represented quite as good class as those by Wallace is a moot point, as will be realized when the list of classic winners by both horses is studied. Wallace’s classic winners were Emir, Mountain King, Patrobas, Wolawa, Wilari, F.J.A., Lady Wallace, Scottish King, Kinglike, Kildalton, Rosana, Moe, Beanba and Red Streak, while those hy Limond were Limerick, Commendation, Ammon Ra, Veilmond, Theo, Cylinder, Limarch, Honour, Waikare, Agrion, Masquerader, Lady Pam, Mask, Spiral, Damaris, Golden Hair, Praise and Variant. Seven of the Limond wins were the Avondale Guineas (twice), Hawke’s Bay Guineas (twice), Wanganui Guineas (twice) and Dunedin Guineas. These races are sometimes won by high-class horses, but usually the competition is restricted and, according to the Melbourne writer, they could not be placed on the same plane as a race like the Caulfield Guineas. With the exception of two Derbies and two St. Legers at Adelaide, all the Wallace successes were gained at Randwick, Flemington or Caulfield, where the opposition was the strongest. LONG STUD CAREER Wallace was himself a high-class horse, a winner over a wide range of distances. He had a long stud career, his progeny racing for twenty-nine seasons, during which they won 975 races. Stakes during most of that period were much smaller than they are today, so it was a remarkable achievement that enabled his progeny to win £276,677 in prize money. His best season was 1911-12, when twentythree of his progeny won seventy races, with stakes totalling £26,743. Horses sired by Limond have been racing for twelve years. In that period they have won 302 races in New Zealand, worth £100,252, and 216 in Aus-, tralia, worth £146,110, a total of 518 races, with stakes totalling £246,362. His best New Zealand season was 193031 when his stock won forty-nine races, worth £16,033 10/ -, while 1931-32 was the best in Australia, with twenty-six races, worth £24,332. Limond was neglected at the stud in England for four seasons before he was sold to Mr G. M. Currie, at whose Wanganui stud he made his great name. It is not generally known that New •Zealand narrowly missed having Wallace for most of his stud career. When Mr J. V. Smith, of Bundoora Stud, purchased him at the auction sale of the St Albans Stud, a Dominion stud master was the last to drop out of the contest.
