THE GREYMOUTH RACES

TOMORROW’S FIELDS (United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, June 16. Following are the Greymouth Jockey Club's acceptances for Saturday (singlepool system of betting):— 1.8 p.m. KAIMATA HANDICAP, £65. Six furlongs and a-half.

GORE RACING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT » The annual report of the Gore Racing Club to be presented at the annual meeting next Wednesday states:— “After allowing a sum of £407 for depreciation of buildings, plant and other fixed assets, a sum of £lBO7 has been added to the capital account, making a balance of £15,139. The cash assets are represented by a net balance at current credit of £592 1/4, Invercargill debentures £6OO, fixed deposit £l5OO and Post Office Saving deposit £5OO. Thus £2600 is interest earning. “The spring meeting held last year produced a profit of £1879 and the February meeting £l4l. Some concern is felt by the committee at the decreasing returns from the summer meeting. There is no doubt that this is the effect of the unjustifiable intrusion «of another Southland meeting between the Dunedin Cup meeting and Gore, and steps will be taken to again bring this unsatisfactory state of affairs to the notice of the Racing Conference. “A sum of £4200 was given in stakes for the year, representing an increase of £540 on the stakes given the previous year. The win and place system of betting on the totalizator was adhered to and the machine handled £54,586 10/-, against £40,373 10/- the previous year. The win machine handled £25,507 and the place machine £29 079 10/-. “Close attention to the club’s appointments has been paid by the works and track committees during the year, the sum of £219 having been spent on maintenance and repairs. The main race-track has been the subject of much favourable comment from visiting owners and trainers and is being kept to a high standard. “Permanent work involving the expenditure of £786 has been carried out, including the construction of concrete steps on the lawn and fronting the grandstand, new judge’s box, pump house and jpump fox - water supply available for washing horses, a sand roll under cover, and a new mower for the lawns and main track. “Once again a large number of horses were trained on the tracks, making heavy demands on the facilities which the club is able to offer. New stabling and sheds for implements are required and a proposal to improve the front entrance to the lawn and enclosures is at present under consideration. It is also proposed to complete the steps at the end of the stand. . “The number of club members is 95, six having been added to the register during the year and five removed, one by death. During the year the club lost an ardent supporter and life member by the death of Mr E. A: Pigeon and since the close of the year Mr L. T. Symes, also an honorary life member, “The following candidates have been nominated to fill the various offices for the ensuing year: President, Mr J. B. Nicol; vice-presidents, Messrs I. T. Martin and F. Wallis, jun.; committee, Messrs J. A. S. Aitken, M. Green, J. E. Rogers, P. G. Ross and G. W. Whittingham. As the number of candidates does not exceed the number of vacancies to be filled all will be declared elected.”

KING’S BIRTHDAY RACING TOTALIZATOR RETURNS Six meetings, four racing and two trotting fixtures, were held last week, and a total of £355,223 passed through the totalizator. Increases, as compared with these fixtures in 1936, were shown at all of the meetings, the largest, £52,340, being at Auckland, where the single pool machine only is used. This is equal to over 39 per cent, increase on last year’s turnover, but at Addington, where the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting was held, under the win and place system of betting the increase was slightly over 50 per cent. The figures for each fixture were:—
