Wilson has returned to Balfour from a short visit to town. Mis# E. Rasmussen has returned to Balfour from a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs J. A. Slaughter, Balfour, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Rutherford, Kaitangata. Mr and Mrs R. Richards and Mrs Ericson, of Bluff, have been the guests of Mrs C. Sherriff, Tuatapere. Mrs W. Asher, Pukerau, was the guest of her sister, Miss E. Roy, Pahiwi, Balfour, during the week. Miss Kay Shand and Miss Greta Stewart, Dipton, are visitors to town Tor the Marcus Show. Miss E. I. Harrington, who is stationed at Riverton, has been appointed assistant mistress at the Waikiwi School. Miss Phyllis Findlay, Dunalister Myross Bush, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs L. Thompson, Waikaia, has returned home. Mrs Charles Bridgeman, Pebbly Hills, Waitane, and her small daughter, Barbara, are spending a holiday in Dunedin, and will later go to the North Island. Mr and Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson, Miss Barbara Cuthbertson and Miss Dora McLeod, of Invercargill, and Mrs V. A. Barclay, of Athol, were recent callers at New Zealand House, London. At the conference of the National Council of Women of Great Britain held last month in London, an afternoon session was devoted to “The Empire Overseas.” New Zealand was represented by Mrs Hugh Kasper, J.P., of Auckland. Mrs Kasper has since left for Washington to represent New Zealand at the Women’s Christian Temperance Union World Conference. The second of a series of euchre and dance evenings, conducted by the Opio school jubilee committee, was held recently. There was a big attendance. The winners of the euchre prizes were Mrs F. Strudwick and Mr John Casey. Music for the dance was supplied .by members of the association. A spot waltz competition was won by Miss Fleming and Mr J. Finn, and a Monte •Carlo waltz was won by Miss Finn and Mr Curtin. A New Zealand Oxford Group team, which left early in the year, has arrived in England by the Rangitiki to take part in “tests” in London, Birmingham, Oxford and probably certain continental countries. • These ‘tests” will consist of meetings, campaigns and house parties, in which Oxford Group teams will demonstrate the answer to a chaotic world. The team comprises Messrs lan McPhail (Hawke’s Bay), Jeffrey Warren (Australia), and Rupert Stigant (Hawke’s Bay), Mrs Florence Wheeler (Fielding), Misses Helen Yule (Invercargill), Enid Middleton (Wellington), and Mary Rice (Waipukurau) v ■ The annual meeting of the Balfour branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the vestry of the Balfour church. The Rev. G. Tweedie presided in the absence of Miss M. Martin. Those present were Mesdames F. Pringle, J. H. McMath, W. Orr, D. M. Alexander, W. Cassels and R. T. Wilson. Apologies were received from W Todd and J. Hood. The secretary, Mrs McMath, submitted the annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit balance of over £3O, which was donated to several branches of the work of the union. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr .Tweedie congratulated the members on their good efforts during the year, and the secretary on hey report. The election of the president and secretary were held over until the next meeting. The other officers were elected as follows:—Vice-presidents, Mesdames F. Pringle and R. T. Wilson; harvest field secretary, Mrs W. Todd; Maori Mission Birthday League, Mrs D. McDonald; mission box secretary, Mrs W. Cassels; auditor, Mr A. P. Scobie. «• Otautau Notes Mr and Mrs John Smith, Waikouro, are touring Central Otago, Dunedin and Canterbury by car. Miss Joan Brown, Waihoaka, was the guest of Mr and Mrs C. Renowden during the week. Mr and Mrs John Thompson, Waikaia, are spending a few days with Mr and Mrs James H. Smith, Eton street. Miss Smith is acting as relieving teacher at the Otautau school during the temporary absence of Miss Petrie. Mr and Mrs Alex Chisholm were visitors to Dunedin last week-end. Mr and Mrs H. Macpherson spent last week-end in Invercargill. Mr and Mrs G. A. Brash and family have taken up residence in Otautau. The Misses Seatter and Mr W. Scatter, who motored to Dunedin for the show, returned home on Monday evening. Miss Mabel Thomson, Ringway, was a successful competitor at the Dunedin show, and secured a first prize for knitted socks out of 22 entries. She was also awarded a first prize at Wellington. Visitors to Dunedin last week from the Otautau district included Mr and Mrs T. Brown, Mr and Mrs R. Baird, Mr and Mrs H. D. Collie and Miss M.. Collie (Bayswater); Messrs H. Clothier, H. Healey and J. D. Clouston. Mr and Mrs P. Sheridan motored to Dunedin last week and have returned Mr and Mrs Castle of Folkestone, Kent, England, who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs S. James, Aparima, left last Thursday for Wellington , to join the Remuera on their return journey. Woodlands Notes Mr and Mrs J. D. Trotter and Miss I. Trotter have returned from Dunedin. Mrs H. Robertson spent the week-end at Palmerston. Mrs A. Gormack was the guest of her daughter, Mrs Campbell, for the Dunedin winter show. Mrs J. Robbie has returned after spending a few days in Invercargill. Miss Margaret Clark has been the guest of Mrs D. Leckie, Makarewa. Miss E. Wallis, Dunedin, spent the week-end with Mrs R. A. McDonald. Weddings CAMPBELL—CLARK St Mary’s Basilica, Invercargill, was the scene of the wedding on Saturday, June 12, of Agnes, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs D Clark. Nith street, to William, eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. Campbell, Waiwera South. The Rev Father J. McKay performed the ceremony. During the ceremony Miss A. Gilfedder sang Gounod’s “Ave Maria.” Miss R. Shepherd played the organ. The bride wore a white marocain

lace trained frock. Her veil was tulle and was held by a halo of orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of arum lilies.

The bridesmaid, Miss Violet Bridgeman, wore a frock of violet velvet, trimmed with gold lamane. She carried a bouquet of bronze chrysanthemums. The best man was Mr Allan Campbell, brother of the bridegroom. The receton was held at Elmwood Garden, where the guests were received by Mrs Rutherford, sister of the bride, and Mrs Campbell, the bridegroom’s mother. Before her marriage the bride was given a gift evening, a pantry evening and a gift afternoon. She received a present from the members of the Basilica choir, the choir master, Mr A. Mahoney, making the presentation. ( The future home of Mr and Mrs “Campbell will be at Waiwera South. CLARE—DENNIS Recently the wedding was solemnized in St. John’s Anglican Church of Beatrice Annie, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Dennis, McMaster street, Invercargill, to Walter Maxwell, only son of Captain and Mrs W. M. Clare, Omaui.

The bride entered the church with her -father wearing a frock of silk lace cut on classical lines, the fitting skirt falling into a long scalloped train. ’Hie unusual neckline was formed by tiny bands of tulle hand faggoted to form a deep yoke. The long, full sleeves were finished with faggoted cuffs and with small sprays of orange blossom at the wrists. Her embroidered tulle veil, worn over her face was held in place with a halo of silver tissue. She carried a sheaf of white lilies.

Miss Jean McKay, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid. She wore a picture frock of hail spotted taffetas and a silver toque. She carried a shower bouquet of chrysanthemums and maidenhair fem.

The bridegroom was attended by Mr E. A. Burt, Dunedin. After the service the guests adjourned to the Rosewood Lounge where the reception was held.
