KING GEORGE V FUND
Contributions From Wellington STATISTICS GIVEN BY MR HISLOP (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 15. A cheque for £16,046 14/2, representing the contributions from the Wellington metropolitan area to the King George V Memorial Fund was handed over to the acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) today at a well-attended gathering in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall. Mr Hislop said the result was one of which the people of Wellington might be justly proud. “Wellington city has contributed £15,222 12/- which, with a population of 115,705, represents a contribution of 2/7 a head for every man, woman and child in the place. The metropolitan area, has contributed £16,012 9/9, which means a contribution of 2/2 a head, for every man, woman and child in that area. On those figures Wellington leads the Dominion. There is a good second away up north. Auckland, over its metropolitan area, has contributed £20,400, which on a population of 212,159, means 1/11 a head for every man, woman and child in that area. We wish to congratulate them on their effort while showing them what has been done in the capital city.” Thanking the Mayor for the cheque Mi- Fraser said that as the member of Parliament for Wellington city he naturally shared the pride in the statistics Mr Hislop had given them. No doubt they would be very closely examined and criticized in other parts of the Dominion. As acting Prime Minister he had to admit every part of the country had done excellently. Wellington had achieved the distinction, Mr Fraser added, of getting the largest donation, that of £3OOO from the Harbour Board and the smallest, one penny from four men of his own nationality, and to that they could add, according to his Worship, the honour of having secured the largest per capita contribution. For all their good work he, on behalf of the Government thanked one and all concerned on what had been a very notable effort.
