SPRINGBOKS’ TOUR
ADMISSION CHARGES TO MATCHES REPLY FROM NEW ZEALAND UNION The prices of admission to the Springbok Rugby matches in New Zealand were again considered by the Management Committee of the Southland Rugby Union at its meeting last evening. Al few weeks ago the committee protested by resolution against the charges that had been fixed by the New Zealand Union. Last evening the following letter in reply to the protest was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Union:— I have to point out that the whole matter of charges was explained to your delegates at the annual, meeting, and they approved of them; and I am requested to ask you to say why the charges are now considered to be excessive. Mr R. T. Meredith, president of the New Zealand Union and one of Southland’s delegates at the annual meeting, said the prices to be charged were not put before the delegates. They were submitted by the management committee and adopted in open meeting by the delegates. There was little discussion at all. The chairman (Mr A. H. Mitchell): The prices are much the same as for similar international games. Mr Meredith: In South Africa as much as £3 was paid for a seat to watch the Tests with the 1928 All Blacks. Mr N. R. Brown: Yes, but they’ve got the Kimberley diamond mines behind them there.
It was agreed to receive the letter, Mr Brown remarking that there was little likelihood of any reduction now being made.
