THE WEATHER
COLD AND CHANGEABLE (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, April 23. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington: Moderate to strong southerly winds. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers and, in places, hail; but gradually improving. Seas rough, with a heavy south-westerly swell. Following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather cold, squally and changeable, with passing showers frequent and heavy in districts with a westerly aspect, and in the southern part of the South Island, and extending occasionally to other parts. Further snow probable in the ranges and hail in places. General Situation.—Another, and possibly the last, of the present series of very intense westerly depressions is crossing the Dominion today. A moderate anti-cyclone covers South-Eastern Australia. Winds.—Strong westerly to southwesterly, of gale force in places and becoming more generally southerly by tomorrow. Seas. —New Zealand waters, rough to high on the West Coast and in Cook and Foveaux Straits. Moderate at first in the eastern coastal areas but rather rough to rough offshore. Eastern Tasman Sea, strong south-westerly winds to gales, with rough to high seas, but later conditions gradually moderating. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine but overcast, a cold wind blowing from the south-east. At one o’clock this morning the weathei - was cold and overcast, with heavy rain falling.
