TRAFFIC SIGNS
NEW REGULATIONS GAZETTED THE QUESTION OF PARKING (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 23. New regulations relating to traffic signs have been gazetted. These are based, in the main, on the recommendations of the conference of traffic authorities, motoi unions and other interested bodies convened by the Minister of Transport (the Hon.. R. Semple) in February. The principal matters of public interest are:— Provision was made for a new type of marking' for pedestrian crossings to make them more distinctive. It is understood that steps will now be taken for a more stringent enforcement of the law regarding these crossings. Motorists must give way. to pedestrians who are using the crossings and must be ready to stop for this purpose if necessary. Overtaking near pedestrian crossings is not permitted. Standard parking signs are provided for instead of the existing signs when •the latter are repainted or replaced. The new signs are coloured yellow, with black lettering or numbers, and are in the form of an oblong placed vertically with a capital letter P .in the upper portion. In the lower portion are either numerals to indicate m minutes the time Emit for parking or the letters “N.P.” to indicate there is no parking permitted. Further information may be supplied by supplementary notices placed below the signs, and these signs must be placed in all streets where any parking restrictions are in force. The regulations further provide that stopping for a period of five minutes or less is not parking for the purpose of the regulations and, unless a special provision is indicated to the contrary below the standard signs, the restrictions do not apply between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. The other signs illustrated in the regulations are generally of the type at present in use, with minor alterations.
