Mandeville FARMERS’ UNION
The annual meeting of the Mandeville branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall recently. Mr J. H. McLeod presided over a good attendance of members. The balance-sheet disclosed a healthy financial position and the membership roll is a creditable one. The president dealt with the year’s work and also gave an interesting account of the more important matters dealt with at the executive meetings. Mr John Stewart, sub-executive delegate, and Mr H. W. C. Horrell, delegate to the conference, also spoke on matters of district and general interest discussed during the year. Hearty votes of appreciation were accorded to the president delegates and secretary. The election of officers resulted for the ensuing year as follows: President, Mr J. H. McLeod; vice-president, Mr M. Roche; delegate to sub-executive (Gore), Mr John Stewart; delegate to executive, Mr Jolm McLeod; delegate to conference and secretary, Mr James Bruce. This is the 25th time in succession that Mr Bruce has been appointed secretary, and treasurer and his faithful attention to the union’s welfare and keen interest in the branch’s success was fittingly referred to by Messrs W. Sheed, R. Miller, J. Stewart and H. Horrell. Among the more important matters dealt with were the urgent necessity of providing a better roadway because of the frequent flooding of the main highway above the township, alterations to the railway stock loading yards and river erosion.
