OBSERVANCE OF ANZAC DAY

arrangements for NEXT SUNDAY SERVICE IN THE CIVIC THEATRE Anzac Day this year falls on next Sunday, April 25. The arrangements show that the significance of the occasion will be recognized as fully as in previous years. , The parade will march to the Civic Theatre for the memorial service, passing through Dee and Tay streets. Both the South African and Great War memorials will be saluted, and the companies will salute the colours when passing them on the march. The parade will be under the command of Lieuten-ant-Colonel E. F. Selby, M.C., V.D., and the marching order will be: Regimental Band, South African Veterans, Returned Soldiers, Southland Regiment, Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland and cadet companies. The president of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr A. Kynaston) will preside at the theatre service and an address will be given by Mr William Bell, of Woodlands. Appropriate hymns will be sung, followed by Scripture reading and prayer by the Rev John Chisholm. A solo, “Requiem, will be sung by Mr P. Linton Hodge, and “The Last Post” and “Reveille will be sounded by Sergeant-Major E. Hunter. The Benediction will be pronounced by the Ven. Archdeacon J. A. Lush. , . t, j During the collection the Civic Band will play sacred selections. Wreaths which are taken to the theatre service will be placed on the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial, or on soldiers’ graves at the cemeteries. An innovation this year will be the setting aside of a plot, to be known as The Field of Remembrance,” in front ot the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial. Neat wooden crosses, mounted with a poppy, have been made by returned soldiers and the public is invited to buy these —the price is one shilling each—and erect them in “The Field of Remembrance. The crosses, which combine effective simplicity with a compactness in size, can be inscribed with the name of the fallen soldier the purchaser wishes to remember. Anzac Day addresses will be given at all the citv primary and secondary schools on Friday. The speakers have not yet been selected. A suitable message will be read in the schools to which it will not be possible to send speakers. -
