A BETTER OUTLOOK

DOMINION CONDITIONS (Spacial to The Times) AUCKLAND, April 5. An outstanding impression of the Dominion which an American visitor, Mr G. H. Strock, is taking away with him after an extended tour of both islands, is of the very great improvements that have been made in the main highways since his previous visit in August of last year. Mr Strock is the executive manager for the division of the Chrysler Export, Corporation which includes Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in its territory. It looked very encouraging, he said, to see the forethought of the Government in establishing up-to-date highways, for efficient transport was one of the things most helpful and essential to progress. . Mr Strock also found an improvement in business and in the general outlook of the people. They seemed much more cheerful and hopeful than they were on his last visit, and they had managed to forget about the lean years. Of course, the higher wool prices had been a marvellous thing for the country. The possibility of developing further beneficial trade relations between Great Britain and the United States and between New Zealand and the United States was referred to by Mr Strock. He mentioned, for instance, that much New Zealand wool which went to England, where it was fabricated into cloth, was then bought* by the United States. Ii would be much better for the trade balance, he considered, if the United States could import the wool direct from New Zealand and do its own fabricating. Mr Strock said he was delighted with the improvement he had found in conditions in New Zealand, and had greatly enjoyed his motor trip. Like many other visitors he was emphatic that its scenic attractions ought to be far more widely advertised to attract tourists to this lovely country.
