BOY ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL
Infantile Paralysis Case WAIKIWI SCHOOL TO BE CLOSED . A boy, 10 years of age, was admitted to the Southland Hospital yesterday morning from Waikiwi, and was diagnosed as a mild, but positive, case of infantile paralysis. This is the first positive case since March 13. The Southland Education Board states that the Waikiwi School will be closed for a fortnight as from today. THE POSITION AT GORE No fresh cases of infantile paralysis were reported at Gore yesterday. The condition of the boy aged nine, who was admitted to the Gore Hospital as a suspected case, is reported to be still satisfactory. ANOTHER CASE IN SOUTH AUCKLAND (United Press Association) HAMILTON, April 5. A girl, aged two years, from Kiokio, was admitted to the Waikato hospital at midday yesterday suffering from infantile paralysis. The case is a positive one, the child being paralysed in the right leg. This is the third case notified in the South Auckland area since last Thursday, the other two being boys, each aged nine years, from Otorohanga and Waharoa. The only other case admitted to the Waikato hospital was from Te Aroha, some time ago. The schools in Waharoa and Otorohanga have been closed. CASE THOUGHT TO BE NEGATIVE (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 5.' Another suspected case of infantile paralysis has been admitted to the hospital, a boy, aged four years, from Colyton. He is not displaying definite signs of paralysis and is expected to prove negative. Of the suspected cases recently admitted one proved positive, this being a 10-year-old boy from Waituna. The other patients are satisfactory, while the other suspected cases proved negative. There are now seven actual cases in hospital, but it should be noted that none are from the city area, the nearest being from Aorangi, 10 miles away. The Sanson school has been closed because of a suspected case in that district. THE WELLINGTON DISTRICT (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 5. A boy, aged 7 years, was admitted to the hospital today from Berhampore suffering from infantile paralysis. The Berhampore school, where he is a pupil, has been closed. The Health Department has been notified of a case at Feilding. The patient is a girl. A child, from Mount Cook, Wellington, is a suspect, but the authorities state that probably the patient has not contracted the disease. SCHOOLS CLOSED FOR A FORTNIGHT (United Press Association) GISBORNE, April 5. A further positive case of infantile paralysis was admitted to the Wairoa Hospital from Nuhaka, the patient being a Maori child of school age. In consequence the Nuhaka schools have been ordered to be closed for a fortnight. A suspected case was reported in Gisborne this morning and the health officials are awaiting the outcome of the tests before deciding on closing the local schools.
