Harraway Shield Match SOUTHLAND DEFEATS OTAGO By 179 points to 171 the Southland representative bowling team defeated Otago in the annual Harraway Shield match at Dunedin on Saturday afternoon. The game was one of eight rinks a side, and after a close contest, in which the Southland team had a good margin in the early stages, Southland proved victorious by eight points. This marked the first occasion in five years on which Southland has won the shield. The Harraway Shield games were inaugurated in 1921, and in the 17 years of matches Otago has won 10 and Southland 6; one has been drawn. The game was played on the Kaitune green, which was in excellent condition, and although the weather was dull and a light shower fell during the afternoon, the surface played evenly. During the early stages Southland took a strong lead, and after 21 heads had been payed there was a margin of over 30 points in favour of Southland. Otago made a strong bid over the last four ends (25 ends were played) and reduced the deficit considerably, but the early lead stood to Southland and a win was recorded. Of the eight Southland rinks -wins were secured by those skipped by N. W. McGorlick, J. Plank, S. C. K. Smith and A. V. Keast. At the conclusion of the match Mr H. Hinton, president of the Dunedin Centre, presented the shield to Mr D. M. Scandrett, chairman of the management committee of the Southland centre, and congratulated Southland on its success. Cheers were given for winner and loser. Following are the scores:— S. O. F. G. Parsons, A. Taylor, G. Kerse, A. D. Crawford 21 — T. R. Crossan, A. McDougall, J. Hope, R. Aitchesop. — 23 R. BOXING PALMER AND DE GANS IN TRAINING During past weeks both Ambrose Palmer and Roy de Gans have put in some excellent training and both men should be at top form for their contest next Monday. The systematic way Palmer goes about his training is an eye-opener to most followers of boxing and those who are able to visit his gymnasium this week to see his final work-outs will be pleasantly surprised. He starts off with several rounds of boxing, then on the bag, then skipping and finally exercises. De Gans is training hard and the contest promises to be most exciting. Owing to an injury to his nose Dick Baker will not be able to fight but negotiations are under way to obtain another good preliminary.
