An Austro-Jewish merchant shipper living in Manchester, Solomon Aschkenasy, publishes a long announcement in London newspapers declaring that he intends to allocate 5 per cent, of all profits of his business from February 7, 1937, to the National Exchequer in order to help the defence of Britain. A further 5 per cent, is being allocated to charity. “I love this country, and would do anything in my power to help it,” says Aschkenasy.
