STRONG PLEA FOR DEMOCRACY

“BRITAIN DOES NOT WANT DICTATORS” (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, October 16. The First Lord of the Admiralty (Sir Samuel Hoare), speaking at Hitchin said: “Two bodies in the United Kingdom wish to discredit democratic Government and build up dictatorships—the Communists and the Fascists. Neither has any roots in British soil, but we shall not ignore them. We are determined to show that ancient democracy can govern. We are not prepared to stand aside and allow foreign inspired minorities to assume the symbols and powers of government. There is no justification in Britain for dictatorships.” Commenting on the foreign policy Sir Samuel said: “Ever since Germany left the League of Nations we have entered a new and dangerous chapter. Most of the world seems to have gone mad. Britain is not prepared t-> intervene in Spain because it means the risk of a European war.” FIGHT AGAINST FASCISM IN BELGIUM MIDDLE GROUPS URGED TO ORGANIZE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Brussels, October 17. The Foreign Minister (M. Paul Spaak) announced that the Belgian Government was planning a big campaign against the Rexist (Fascist) Party, which he declared had no programme. Its aim was the winning of power without delay and the establishment of a totalitarian State under the dictatorship of its leader, M. Leon Degrelle, said M. Spaak. The country’s middle groups must organize to defend their liberties.
