Trades
STEPS FOR TRAINING YOUNG MEN (United Press Association.) Christchurch, September 21. The Government intends to establish special workshops for the training ofyoung men in skilled trades according to a statement made by the Minister of Employment (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) in an interview to-day. “We are already beginning to feel a shortage of skilled labour in certain lines,” said the Minister, “and I am afraid that before long the shortage will be very seriously felt. At the same time, there are thousands of promising young men who, with a short course of training, perhaps half as long as might be required for the ordinary type, could be turned out as fairly skilled workmen. The Government is giving very serious consideration to that aspect of the training of youths. We are even going to the extent of establishing workshops for training in skilled trades, especially the building trade. That is the Government’s intention at present.”
