SWIMMING

COLLEGIATE CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT

The annual report of the Collegiate Swimming Club, to be presented at the annual meeting of the club to-night, states:—

The club has had an excellent season, marked by good attendances fit the club-hour and a stimulating interest on the part of the patron, Mr C. A. Stewart, and the staff of the Technical College. The lack of junior and intermediate members gives cause for concern, and to ensure a successful future for the club it will be necessary to adopt measures to strengthen this particular section. Congratulations go to K. Shaw (Collegiate) and also to members of other clubs, Misses N. Basstian (ExPupils) and C. Lynch (Murihiku) and Paul Mclnnes (Ex-Pupils) upon their successes at the New Zealand championships. In conjunction with the Oreti Surf Club a combined water polo team was entered in the competition. After some practice it developed into a strong combination and proved capable of extending Ex-Pupils, the ultimate winners. The financial statement shows that the club is in a sound position. The annual carnival was well run and proved a success. Three provincial records were broken at the carnival. A. Brown accounted for the 150 yards men’s backstroke, Miss M. Day the 220 yards women’s breaststroke and J. Cameron the 33 1-3 yards junior boys’ breaststroke. Club trophies competed for during the season were won by Miss J. Hannon (old students’ women’s trophy); W. Coatsworth (old students’ men’s trophy); H. M. Aitken Trophy (boys), K. Shaw; George Rask Trophy (girls), Miss A. Mair; championship trophies, Miss J. Hannon and K. Shaw. National successes were won by K. Shaw, first New Zealand 220 yards intermediate boys’ breaststroke championship; Miss D. Symon, third 100 and 220 yards New Zealand freestyle championship. The following gained success in Southland: A. Branks, first intermediate boys’ diving championship; Miss A. Mair, second intermediate girls’ diving championship; Miss M. Gulliver, second 100 yards intermediate girls’ freestyle trial; Miss J. Hannon, second 100 yards intermediate girls’ breaststroke trial; K. Shaw, first intermediate boys’ 220 yards breaststroke championship. Others to perform with credit were Misses P. Hall and C. Marshall and H. Smith, D. Jenkin and J. Coatsworth.

The club was unfortunate in losing Miss D. Symon, former New Zealand freestyle title and record holder and H. Smith, a keen intermediate swimmer, who are now in Timaru and Dunedin respectively.

ROWING

RAILWAY CLUB. SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. The official opening of the Railway Rowing Club’s jubilee season was held on Saturday afternoon in warm sunshine—a happy augury for what is hoped will be the club’s most successful season. There was a big attendance of members and intending members. The club president, Mr C. Henderson, expressed his pleasure at the fine response which had been given to the “call of opening day” and welcomed those who had come to take part in the “Learn To Row Week” campaign which the club had inaugurated. This campaign had been launched, he said, with the purpose of encouraging young men to take up what was probably the finest sport in the world. Those who took part were under no obligation to join the club. They would be instructed by members in the rudiments of rowing, and after three weeks should know whether they wish to take up the sport or turn to some easier summer game. “Rowing is a man’s sport,” Mr Henderson added, “ and brings out the best, or the worst, in a man. The club will welcome any recruits and will endeavour to show them that they have chosen their summer pastime wisely and well.” Mr T. Marshall, who also spoke, wished the club success in its jubilee season.

To celebrate the official opening, a smoke concert was held in the evening.
