QUEEN’S PARK CLUB

QUALIFYING ROUNDS COMPLETED

Overhead conditions were perfect and the course was quite good after two days’ rough weather for the September medal handicap and second qualifying round of the club championship competitions at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon. The following players qualified for match play:— Club Championship.

AMATEUR TITLE OF U.S.A. FISCHER BEATS McLEAN. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) New York, Sept. 19. Johnny Fischer, of Cincinnati, won the amateur golf title of the United States by defeating Jack McLean (Glasgow), 1 up at the 37th. Fischer was 3 down with eight holes to play, but gave a remarkable display of golf to pull up and win.

AMAZING RECOVERY BY REES. E. R. WHITCOMBE WINS BRITISH PROFESSIONAL TITLE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, September 18. _ln the final of the British professional golf championship E. R. Whitcombe defeated D. Rees, 1 up. Rees, who is Welsh, is assistant professional at the Surbiton Golf Club, and is only the second assistant in 23 years to reach the semi-final of professional match play in the championship.

Rees is 23 years of age and sft 6in in height. Described as a little man without nerves, he produced one of the most amazing recoveries in the history of professional golf. He turned 5 down and still faced an overwhelming deficit with 14 holes to go, when he did 10 holes in 34. He had “birdies” at six holes and only one putt on seven greens.

Whitcombe had par figures at the same holes.
