(By The Curragh.) The Avondale meeting will be concluded to-day.

Nominations for the Kurow Spring fixture close to-morrow.

Acceptances for the first day of the Geraldine meeting close to-day.

Weights for the first day of the Dunedin Spring meeting will appear next Monday.

J. Olsen has returned Hunting Jay to his owner. He is a good galloper, but it is a pity that he has such bad manners.

Hest, a fine track galloper, but a disappointment on the race track, is to be retired and mated with Leighon Tor, who is standing at Wanganui.

Jack Ahoy has started in 24 races for two wins, three seconds and five thirds since he began racing last season. He should show improved form this season.

Trench Fight, who won for Sir Charles Clifford at Ashburton on Saturday, is by Winning Hit from Scrimmage, and is a three-year-old brother to Fracas. He is a promising type.

Cables to Australian papers in connection with the English St. Leger show that Rhodes Scholar was a starter. The winner, Boswell, was at fairly substantial odds. He was ridden by P. Beasley.

One of the weaknesses of the trotting handicapping system is that a horse like Kingcraft, who contested the Cup race several times from 1929 onwards, was let up until he could win three races and still be ineligible for a race in which he was once made favourite.

Guinea Fowl, who won the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, is by Paper Money from Capercailzie, who is a sister to Wild Hind, dam of Wild Chase, also by Paper Money. She is stated to be bigger than Wild Chase at the same age.

F. J. Smith’s star was not in the ascendant at Hutt Park last week. The sum of £llB9 10/- was lost to supporters of Vain Lad at the Wellington Meeting. In all, horses from Smith’s stable, who could not manage to fill a place, carried £2617.

Mr J. Porter has claimed the name of Tint o’ Tan for his two-year-old bay colt by Martarma from Star Lady (a three-quarter-brother to Star Stranger), and the name of Eris Desmond for his two-year-old black filly by Martarma from Lady Desmond (a halfsister to Diamond).

The main reason given for the scratching of Bonny Azure for the Bollard Memorial Handicap at Wellington was the fact that she would have received a penalty for a mile and aquarter as well as for two miles in the event of her winning the longer race. It was possibly held to be more to her advantage to contest the sprint event.

Michaela, who won a Stewards’ Handicap in the colours of Mr J. Todd, and later dam of Nedda and Don Jose, died at The Curragh Stud, Waikanae, where she was being cared for in her retirement by Mr J. J. McGrath on behalf of her owner, the Rev. Father Farthing, who is at present in Australia. She was 24 years of age.

Graham Direct will probably have his next race in the Weston Handicap at Oamaru. The speed he showed in patches at Wellington gave the impression that he will be better than ever this season. At this meeting last year Graham Direct won the Jubilee Handicap, limit 4.31, from the front line. The Weston Handicap, limit 2.44, was won by Indianapolis from 60 yards behind.

The Dominion says:—“A correspondent has raised the question as to how racing clubs stand in regard to the recent legislation restoring salaries to the 1931 level. Racing clubs are in the same position as all other employers of labour, and are required by law to restore salaries to the 1931 level. The Takapuna Jockey Club last week decided to restore all the fees of officials to what they were five years ago.”

The Victoria Amateur Turf Club is said to be contemplating the installation of an “electric eye” camera to judge close finishes at Caulfield. Such an apparatus would cost some,, thousands of pounds, and it has yet to be proved that it always tells the truth. Australian clubs could obviate risk of many mistakes in a much cheaper manner—by shifting the judge’s box back from the rails and elevating it above the level of the track.

A colt who was much admired at the yearling sales in Sydney last year was the son of Magpie and Castile, who became the possession of Mr C. P. Wilson for 950 guineas. The colt raced as Fakenham, and he won his first race in a second division at Ascot on September 9. The colt who followed Fakenham into the ring was Talking, who fetched 120 guineas, and is now one of the leading three-year-olds in Sydney.

Huntsman’s Chorus, who is entered for the Mt. Albert Handicap, six furlongs, on the second day of the Avondale meeting, has been shaping well in his track work at Ellerslie for several weeks past. His effort over six furlongs at Ellerslie on Wednesday morning, when he registered Imin 26 3-ssec, was a good one, considering the state of the ground. At the recent Pakuranga meeting Huntsman’s Chorus was right in the picture till the straight in the Auckland Handicap, one mile, and then faded out. The shorter distance will be in his favour

Sea Wrack ran two good races at the Wanganui meeting last week ,and it should not be long before she is on

the winning list. On the first day she was third in the Maiden Race, six furlongs, and Mandamus was the only one to beat her in the Trial Handicap, of similar distance, on the second day. She is a three-year-old filly by Lackham from Orazone, and is trained by r. George at Trentham. She is due to make her next appearance in the Maiden Race at Marton next Saturday week, and if started should take some beating.

It seemed to me (says “Pilot, in The Sydney Referee) that backers who supported Silver Streak for the Canterbury Stakes at Canterbury displayed a contempt for the A.J.C. handicapper s figures in expecting him to beat Cuddle. He was giving the latter 21b, whereas he is in receipt of 121 b from her in the Epsom. Silver Streak was unlucky at the start, and never got in it. While it is improbable he will succeed in w.f.a. races over here, his third in the Campbelltown Handicap is likely to keep him sufficiently high in the weights m handicaps to make success for him difficult in anything.

Encouraged by his success at Wanganui, Smith Bros., owners of Wotan, made a hurried change of plans, ana he is being sent over to join J. Fryers team at Warwick Farm. He left Hawera by float for Marton on Friday morning, from where he will be entrained for Auckland. Accompanied by his owners, he sailed ontheAwatea on Saturday. Wotan appears to have come solid at last, having benefited considerably by the racing he had last week. He was not nominated for the A.J.C. meeting, and will be reserved for Victorian racing. He is engaged in both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups.

The A. J C. Derby has a stake of £5OOO added ,out of which the second horse gets £BOO and the third £4OO. Forfeits and payments add considerably to the prize, but it will not be substantially more than the £4OOO offer that the owner of Mala is reported to have, received, writes “The Watcher.’ It is a good horse that is worth £4OOO, and it is to be hoped that Mala turns out good enough to justify that price refusal. Instances have occurred in the past where substantial offers for New Zealand horses have been turned down, to the subsequent regret of their owners. The outstanding example is possibly Tarleton. Prior to the A.J.C. Derby Mr G. L. Stead refused £6OOO. In those days the A.J.C. Derby prize was getting on toward five figures, but even so it was a great offer. A few weeks later Mr Stead could not have got as many hundreds for him.

With the approach of the most important racing events of the year, all punters are on the qui vive for a tip from a reliable source and words from the wise are eagerly sought. Personally I never look for tips, as racing folk have little time for the man who wants something for nothing. Nevertheless (says a Melbourne writer) many tips are given me—sometimes three or four for the one race. Anyhow, here is a dialogue that took place between Jack Phillips, who won a Caulfield Cup with Gaine Carrington, and Eric Connolly, the Commonwealth’s premier punter, after Desert Chief passed the post with lengths to spare in the Epsom Cup. Phillips: “Well, Eric, you told me a few weeks back that Desert Chief would win the Caulfield Cup. Connolly: “And I’ve seen nothing to-day to make me change that opinion.

In January of last year, Mr E. Norton, of Sydney, bought three horses at the Trentham yearling sales and left them with H. Pritchard at Trentham to be broken in and started on light work. They were later sent over to Sydney, but were not required to do much racing as two-year-olds, though one of them, Retrieved, was a winner at Rosehill in May. The second of them to succeed was Stalin, who won a division of the Park Stakes at the Canterbury Park Meeting recently. Stalin and Retrieved were each secured for 300gns. Stalin is a brown colt by Chief Ruler from the Kilbroney mare Rosellate, so that he is a brother to Tenterden, Richborough, Posy, and Cavalcade, all winners, with Tenterden a performer above average ability. Stalin raced only two or three times last season. The third purchase, Prospective, a Prosterity—Anklet colt, who cost 750gns, has so far been a failure in his few races.

Rosehill Meeting

SILVER RING WINS HILL STAKES

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, September 20. Tire Rosehill races, as a full dress rehearsal for the Randwick spring meeting, attracted the keenest interest, features being the defeat of Talking (who has been regarded in some quarters as Gold Rod’s most formidable rival) by Shakespeare whom Gold Rod comfortably defeated at Warwick Farm, and Silver Ring’s fine victory in the Hill Stakes. Shakespeare displayed more doggedness than Talking ■who led into the straight, while Silver Ring, after racing attractively throughout, wrested victory from the pacemaker, Lough Neagh, who battled on courageously. Sarcherie was near the lead throughout. The results were:—
