GOOD PERFORMANCE BY J. METCALFE. THIRD FASTEST TIME IN MODIFIED MARATHON. J. Metcalfe, of the Invercargill Harrier Club, gained third fastest time and finished fifth in the modified marathon held over a 14-mile course on the Taieri Plains on Saturday. Metcalfe, who was the only competitor from outside Dunedin, had a handicap of 3min 30sec, his time for the race being 84min 58sec. The race resulted:— R. G. Pilling (University) smin 45sec 1 G. L. Austin (Caversham) Imin 2 A. G. Hebberd (Caversham) smin 45sec 3 R. Wilson (Mornington) 9min 4 J. Metcalfe (Invercargill) 3min 30sec 5 The three best times were:— G. L. Austin (79min lsec ) 1 R. G. Pilling (80min 39sec) 2 J. Metcalfe (84min 58sec) 3 Tills performance concludes a very successful season for Metcalfe, who won his club cross-country championship, and club road race championship, returned fastest time in the Southland Trust Cup road race and was the first Southland harrier home (finishing third) in the Southland cross-country championship. INVERCARGILL CLUB. The Invercargill Harrier Club held the final run of the season at Waikiwi on Saturday afternoon. There was a good muster and under the guidance of the club captain, J. Chaplin, the runners enjoyed a short run in the West Plains district. In the evening the harriers were guests of the committee at dinner, Messrs T. Denny, A. Ker and M. Gilbert returning thanks on behalf of the runners.
